American build designs get many things right.…
But when it comes to saunas, the Finnish know best. That’s why we have derived all our key principles on the traditional Finnish sauna.
FAQ
Why insulated walls and ceiling?
A: Faster warm-up times, better heat radiation from walls, less influence from exterior temperatures
Why an open deck?
A: At first, the open deck design sounds counter-intuitive especially after the above answer. However, the open deck’s benefits are impressive. An open deck for an outdoor sauna creates an environment that is extremely easy to clean. It rejuvenates the sauna after each use by allowing an abundance of fresh air to dry, and freshen the air inside the sauna.
Why a tall sauna profile?
A: The traditional Finnish sauna utilizes the natural movement of hot & cold air to disperse the heat across the room. Fresh air gets pulled up from the floor into the heater which super-heats the air and shoots the air straight up. The hot air will start to build thermal mass at the top of the room and slowly work its way down from the ceiling to the benches. The taller the sauna, the better it “traps“ this heat bubble. Also, a simple Finnish sauna rule is the the feet must be above the rocks. This ensures that the user’s body maintains even and balanced heat saturation.
Why water/vapor proof?
A: The Löyly effect (pouring water on the rocks) creates humidity which can rot anything that does not have ample ventilation to dry out. It also allows for a literal “hose out“ of the sauna for fast cleaning.
Why an oversized deck?
A: why not? It looks great, allows for a perfect place to stack your split wood, or creates a place for decorations off the ground. Depending on the size of the deck ordered, it can also double as a workout pad for exercises or stretching in between sauna sessions.
Why a single slope roof?
A: A single slope roof encourages the flow of hot air up to the highest point which is where we place the top bench.
